Mudcloth (bògòlanfini) is a handmade cotton fabric from Mali that is traditionally dyed with fermented mud. It has an important place in Malian culture. Men weave the cloth and women dye it. Each piece of mud cloth has a story to tell. The symbols, and the way in which they are arranged, as well as the colour and shape of the mudcloth reveal a variety of different secrets. Social status, a person’s character or occupation, are all things which a piece of mudcloth can represent.
